Start Your Day With a Guava-Stuffed Pastry at La Famosa
Joancarlo Parkhurst’s favorite memories from his childhood include his grandmother—or “Mamita,” as he called her—and his family kitchen in Puerto Rico. He’d spend hours there with her learning how to replicate his family’s recipes, including delicious baked goods. Joancarlo and his family relocated to New York when he was only five, but he’d visit Mamita (and her kitchen) often. He pays homage to her today as the chef and owner of La Famosa.
La Famosa recently opened its doors in the Navy Yard with special precautions in place to keep its ever-growing legion of fans safe. Although it’s not currently offering takeout or delivery, indoor and outdoor seating are both available with reduced capacity and social distancing in place. Sit down for breakfast to try the guava-stuffed pastry with coffee or espresso, or perhaps a mango batido—a mix of fresh fruit, milk, sugar, and ice. If you come for dinner, start with the pastelillos, fried turnovers stuffed with beef, veggies, or crab, and end with passionfruit mousse or coconut macaroons. In between, enjoy an entree such as the chuleta Kan-Kan, a Puerto Rican-style pork chop with rice, beans, and tostones.
